Bleeding Tricolour: By any name, one tough team

It is still 10 days away, but The Score's promo for the Oct. 17 University Rush game between 5-0 Queen's and (cough) 4-1 Western is posted. It looks pretty sharp.

You would have to be really obsessive to notice it, but the Western players say, "We are the Western Mustangs." The Big Yellow Guys, QB Dan Brannagan, linebacker T.J. Leeper, slotback Devan Sheahan and linebacker Chris Smith, say, "We are Queen's University."

It's pretty well-played, using the full name of the school. It neatly sidesteps last fall's Golden Gaels/Gaels mini-furore. Queen's is also big on playing up the school name in its marketing and maybe it helps point out about how The Game is part of something larger at Queen's than just the team.

It is kind of funny how that issue has gone away this season. It's like everyone just learned to get along with it. The P.A. announcer at Richardson Stadium has been using "Golden Gaels," and so have a lot of Kingston media. It's like it's a coolness test; if outlets in other markets who are not bound by OUA policy use "Queen's Gaels," it's like it reveals how little care and regard some have for Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Either way, the focus is on the field.

Zen Dayley: We might yet get saved from a Red Sox-Yankees ALCS

This time of year, you're bound to hear all sorts of October-only baseball fans coming out of the woodwork to make mountains of random statistical molehills.

For instance, the Philadelphia Phillies are vulnerable because closer Brad Lidge has sucked out loud. They're throwing Cliff Lee in Game 1 instead of Cole Hamels, who was vice-president of awesome in the 2008 playoffs but pitched like the assistant undersecretary of only OK for most of this season (but found his form the past couple weeks.)

The L.A. Dodgers dawdled and dragged their feet before finally wrapping up their division. The L.A. Angels have lost to the Boston Red Sox three consecutive times in the playoffs. The Yankees will not have Jorge Posada's bat in the lineup for a couple games, since weak-hitting Jose Molina is the personal catcher for A.J. Burnett. The Twins are scrappy -- they got shut out only four times all season!

All of that is well and good, but you might succumb to paralysis by analysis. The Bill James Playoff Predictor makes it nice and simple. (Or not.) It might be just as off and more serious Seamheads have likely discredited it, but at least it's is a fully hacked-out framework suitable for clipping and saving:

  1. 1 point to the lead team for each half-game in the standings
  2. 3 points to the team that scored more runs
  3. 14 points to the team with fewer doubles
  4. 12 points to the team with more triples
  5. 10 points to the team with more home runs
  6. 8 points to the team with the lower team batting average
  7. 8 points to the team that committed fewer errors
  8. 7 points to the team that turned more double plays
  9. 7 points to the team that walked more batters
  10. 19 points to the team that had more shutouts
  11. 15 points to the team whose ERA was lower
  12. 12 points to the team that has been in postseason most recently or went further
  13. 12 points to the team that won season series.

Please click through to find out who is going to win. Long story short, you won't be so happy that the Minnesota Twins and not the Detroit Tigers won the AL Central title:

Friday Night Football: Lions - Riders live blog!

It's a great CFL Friday night showdown. In one corner, we have the 7-5 Saskatchewan Roughriders, tied for first place in the West Division; in the other one, the 5-7 B.C. Lions, in the division cellar. The playoff race is so close at the moment that this could be a huge game. I'll be live-blogging it here and at Sporting Madness starting at 10:30 p.m. Eastern/7:30 p.m. Pacific. Come join me below the jump!

Fall of civilization

There comes a time when sports should be an escape from "normal" life. Other times, life needs an escape from sports.

Here are examples of both

Today will be a sad day in Brandon as the lights get turned off for good at a television station. Even as I work at a competing media outlet in the city, it needs to be said fewer voices doesn't mean better journalism. CKX covered local sports. They covered local news. Yet the very networks that see fit to proclaim they are saving local television fail to see the err in their logic with this move. Attempts were made to keep the station open, but how can networks like CTV claim they are trying to save local TV when they shut down local stations? I will mourn the loss of the station, and wish the staff going through a difficult time the very best. I encourage you to do the same. The station will fade to black after the 6 p.m. (Central Time) newscast.

To the drunken fans screaming in the background of Hockey Night in Canada's post-game show in Calgary: Yes, I saw you on national TV. Thank you for putting a face on the phrase, "What a jackass." I was having troubles visualizing this concept, but thanks to you, I can now see it clearly.

For all the Montreal Canadiens fans calling for Carey Price's head: Have you changed your minds or are you waiting for the winds to change again? With this number of lineup changes, I would take a wait and see attitude. Thursday's win is a win, but there's a lot of team chemistry to concoct before they can dust off the old Stanley Cup parade route. Of course, they'd have to draw up new ones for Toronto to take into account the CN Tower and the Gardiner Expressway, so feel free to enjoy the win.

To Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans and players: One win does not mean a parade in your honour. And it likely says more about your overall situation when fans would give you one just for consecutive wins.

Note to self: While choosing a couple of Eagles for the fantasy football team seemed like a good idea at the time (and it still might be, considering Westbrook and Jackson are the picks) it's a bad time for a bye week when running back Frank Gore's out and Kevin Smith faces the Bears.

Who do you start? Tom Brady, or Joe Flacco? Logic says Brady, but so far, Flacco has out-performed Brady by 17 points. And I'm already out two running backs.

The Phoenix Coyotes, owned by the NHL, trying to find a buyer. Ask anyone affiliated with the Montreal Expos how that worked for them. Good luck with that.

When a 14-year-old holds a one-shot lead at an LPGA event, you have to ask a couple of questions. Starting with: When will parents let kids be kids? Followed by: Why doesn't the LPGA have a rule stating you need to be the 18 to play?

I normally dislike watching MMA events on TV. But at work (yes, we have cable in newsrooms), a few of us saw Kimbo Slice as he took on what I would have to describe as a morbidly obese caucasian. When the fat guy wins, is that the same as hearing a woman of similar girth wearing a viking helmet and a prom dress belting out Andrew Lloyd Weber? He should consider a career change.
