No surprise here -- Mark McGwire was rebuffed with extreme prejudice by the Baseball Hall of Fame voters, getting just 23.5% support in the balloting. Hey, why don't we see if those professional sportswriters ever took anything stronger than coffee to stay awake through all those night games they had to cover.
(Scott Carefoot has a great take, by the way, and so does Sportsnet.ca's Scott Carson.)
What's disappointing to Canadian baseball fans is that former Expos star outfielder Andre Dawson dropped to 56% support after getting 61% in 2006. And no one in the Canadian media seems to be writing about the raw deal "The Hawk" is getting, year after year. Look on the bright side: There's a chance, however slim, that he and former teammate Tim Raines, who becomes eligible next year, will be inducted together. (OK, so it's really slim.)
One positive note is the strong support for Goose Gossage (71.2, just short of the 75% needed for induction), who had a much better career than fellow relief pitcher and 2006 inductee Bruce Sutter.
Congrats to a pair of great ballplayers who played their entire career in mid-sized markets -- Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken. I'm at work right now, so unfortunately there isn't time for a full post.
