PLAYING DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL, AND WE LOVE IT

Baseball Musings has gone and done us all a freakin' favour by figuring out the two scenarios where there could be a four-way tie for the National League wild-card spot (Phillies, Mets, Padres and Rockies or the Diamondbacks).

Thing is, there's almost some guiding principle that keeps these crazy three- or four-way tiebreakers from happening. There was a chance for a three-way playoff in 1964, but the St. Louis Cardinals avoided it by winning their final game to eliminate Philadelphia (the infamous Pholdin' Phils) and the Cincinnati Reds. Still, it's nice to let your mind run wild thinking about what could happen across these next three (or more) days.

There's something to be said for the National League not having one team capable to separating from the morass of mediocrity.

I hate to admit it but yes "There's something to be said for the National League not having one team capable to separating from the morass of mediocrity."

On the subject of parity / mediocrity, I read recently that this is the first season in many that no team will finish with a winning percentage of .600 + or - .400.

The purists ( including me ) don't like it but it's not going away. Parity and the Wild Card are the principal reasons that MLB is setting a 4th consecutive attendance record this season.

This weekend I'm pulling for the Rockies. Jeff Francis has had a great season and not surprisingly has been pretty much ignored in his home and native land. I'm also pulling for the Phillies because Charlie Manuel got such a rough ride from the press this season, particularly early on. I'll root against the Mets because it's human instinct to root against the team with all the loot.

Too bad the Brewers haven't been winning and making the Central more interesting. It was a lot of fun yesterday watching the Cubs lose to the Marlins, Cub fans are sooooo neurotic. Also always a pleasure to see legendary ball fan Bill Murray at the game in FLA.
