ALMA MATER ABOUT TO FACE ANOTHER MEDIA FEEDING FRENZY

Here's a fun find: Yesterday, the same day of the fatal shooting at Dawson College in Montreal, there was another school shooting in Canada. This one only involved a kid getting shot with a pellet gun while riding the bus home, but it happened to involve students at my alma mater, Ernestown Secondary School in Odessa, Ontario.

Now here's the fun part. Those of you who hail from Eastern Ontario will remember that Ernestown was national news back in April when two girls were charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with a "hit list" of students, teachers and administrators that was circulated via the Internet. At that time, a 14-year-old boy was also charged with one count of threatening.

In other words, holy flurking schnit. You have to tread lightly when it's only allegations and youths that are being reported on, but knowing the media as we do, there's certainly nothing to stop them from saying it's the same school, assuming that the audience will probably just jump to the conclusion that the incidents are related no matter what butt-covering disclaimers are made.

If there's a connection between what happened in the spring and what happened on Wednesday, you will find out soon enough.

Take heart, Eagles. It's brutal that a student was shot, but spin-wise, the timing isn't all that bad. Not only did it get trumped on a national scale by the events in Montreal, but with the Queen's Homecoming party/riot and rogue agent David Frost due to appear in court next week, it might not even have legs as a local story.
