OF PLAYOFFS AND BAD GRAMMAR

And a few other things I was following last night while listening to TV bingo callers mispronounce the name of my old high school . . .
  • NHL playoffs, Day 6: HURRICANES 2 HABS 1 (OT) In a Montreal minute, everything can change -- Saku Koivu went out with an eye injury and the Hurricanes, with Cam Ward now in the net and Martin Gerber on the bench, won on Eric Staal's goal to get back into the series.
  • DEVILS 3 RANGERS 0 Boy the Devils sure sucked the fun out of the Rangers' first home playoff game since '97, didn't they? Nothing much to say here, except TSN's James Duthie says he'll give his job to Maggie the Monkey if the Rangers come back. James, you've got nothing to worry about. The Rangers is dead.
  • FLYERS 4 SABRES 2 Forsberg's back, and so is Philly, but the real story here is Brian Savage's short-hander -- that might have turned this series around and started doubt to seep through the ranks of the Sabres.
  • AVS 4 STARS 3 Dallas gives this one away, and now Dave Tippett's neck, not just his team's season, is on the line... Eric McErlain is just grateful to the Stars "for folding early enough so I can get some sleep." Amen to that.
  • OK, OK, BLUE JAYS: Vernon Wells, clearly benefiting from his exposure to the World Baseball Classic, smokes a couple dingers to lead the Jays to a 8-2 thumping of Baltimore.
  • You may have heard the NFL draft is this weekend. Patrick Hruby is speaking for those of us who only start to pay attention to football when it's time to pay attention to football, in August (or June, if you follow the CFL): "The last time I maximized a pick, I shoved my pinky a little deeper into my nostril."
  • Man, I'm trying to give Prime Minister Stephen Harper the benefit of the doubt -- the last thing Canada needs is another election -- but when even a right-wing columnist like Charles Adler is raking you over the coals and drawing unflattering comparisons to Bush, it doesn't bode well. What does Harper have going for him? Self-preservation and a disorganized centre-left of the political spectrum? Not much, it would seem.
  • HOLY FLURKING SHNIT: My old high school, Ernestown Secondary School in Odessa, Ont., is in the national news for all the wrong reasons: two students, girls ages 14 and 15, have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after at least 15 students and teachers at the school became the subject of online threats.
  • Now, FYI to news readers. It's pronounced Er-nes-town, not Earns-town. That second E is there for a reason. Goddamnit, I hate it when people can't enunciate.
