Looks like Brandon League and Jeremy Accardo are going to get a lot more 7th/8th inning work down the stretch for the Blue Jays. Lefty reliever Scott Schoeneweis has been traded to the NL wild card-leading Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named later.
(Batter's Box already has a discussion going.)
Schoeneweis can certainly help the Reds, who at 61-58 lead the NL wild-card race and are only 2½ games behind St. Louis in the NL Central. In other words, Schoeneweis had to go to a National League team with a worse record than the Jays to be part of a playoff race. So it goes.
It's probably best not to get overly excited over a) the Jays parting with Schoeneweis, since they're all but out of the race and he had been largely ineffective this season (6.51 ERA in 37.1 innings) and b) the Jays getting much in return. The guess here is that the Reds probably gave the Jays a list of minor leaguers and gave them time to make an informed choice.
Bottom line: the Jays pitching staff you see in these final weeks of the season is now much closer to the 2007 staff.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
