There's no real shock that the Kingston Frontenacs passed on today's CHL import draft.
GM-for-life Larry Mavety has enough trouble getting players from, say (completely hypothetical example) Stouffville to report, let alone Stockholm. The hell of it is, dealing the No. 10 overall pick to the Windsor Spitfires for second- and fourth-round selections actually makes sense in the bizarro world of the Fronts. (Seriously, it's jarring to hear another junior hockey GM talking enthusiastically about the import draft, instead of treating it like a huge nuisance.)
With the trade, the Fronts can add two decent players instead of one potential gamebreaker such as Czech winger Richard Janik, whom Windsor took with the selection. Janik was one of the top scorers this spring at the World Under-18 Tournament. Who knows how he'll do in North America, assuming he's coming.
It's such a relief that the Frontenacs decided not to find out for themselves (appreciate the sarcasm; they are a young team, unlike Windsor, so maybe there is a method to the Mavness).
Can you picture Janik and another star from the U-18s who's on the Spitfires, Kingston's own Taylor Hall, teaming up to tear up the league over the next couple years? That's the thing. Windsor fans can picture it; Kingston fans can't even imagine it.

This reminds me of Major League when the owner brings in all kinds of shitty players or has beens and tries to make them lose so she can move the team to Florida...
Springer is about retirement age right? and so is mav? Maybe i'm on to something here...
The Latvian kid Andris Dzerins would rather be in Sudbury than close to Toronto, the largest latvian community outside Latvia?? I think it is more that the Fronternacs doesn't know where Latvia is, heck they might just be hard pressed to find Napanee on a map:)
@ Big V: Nice, actually Springer is a youngish guy (40s?)... Mavety is 66 this year, but who are we to say the game has passed him by?
(Oh, right, we're fans who buy tickets and support this team.)
@ Krister: The Fronts keep issuing assurances that Dzerins is returning as an overager, although it's not often an OA spot goes to a European player.
The Wolves took the Russian, Nikita Filatov, who was the No. 6 pick in the NHL draft.
I saw that Pres Bush has removed North Korea from the Axis of Evil...
Can you think of any replacements?
Richard Peddie?
I'd say Saudi Arabia, but it has more oil.
Wait, maybe Don Cherry is running the team under the disguise of Mav...
Two Canadian boys are better than an NHL drafted Russian...
Makes sense
Well Cherry did have all that success in Mississauga. Wait, sorry...that was after he left.
Carry on...
