JACQUES DOUCET, BACK IN THE BOOTH

The Canadian Press caught up with legendary Expos play-by-play man Jacques Doucet, who's doing play-by-play for the Québec Capitales of the independent Can-Am League.

It goes without saying Doucet was to Expos fans what the late Tom Cheek was to Jays followers and it's ridiculous neither man is in the broadcasters' wing of the Hall of Fame, which is decided by fan balloting. You know how it was said at the time of Cheek's death in October 2005 that he taught baseball to a generation of Jays fans? Doucet, who called Expos games for 33 years, not only did the same but as the CP story relates, he also had to create a whole lexicon of French baseball terminology, sometimes on the fly.

The Capitales won the Can-Am League championship last season, which was part of a great sports year for Québec that included the Remparts winning the Memorial Cup in junior hockey and the Laval Rouge et Or winning their third Vanier Cup in four seasons. My bad for not realizing that until now.
