It could be the start of a great turnaround or it could just be the Oshawa Generals acting on a hope to get an extra home playoff date.
The Kingston Frontenacs will live to (put up a half-hearted) fight another day. Chris Stewart opened the scoring six minutes in, Jason Guy stepped in to make 38 saves and the Fronts thumped the Generals 8-2 tonight, extending their best-of-seven first-round OHL playoff series to a Game 5 tomorrow in the 'Shwa. It was a serious ass-forking, but (there's that word it again) these are the same Frontenacs who got scored on twice during the same two-man power play in on Tuesday, so it's rather easy to curb your enthusiasm. (Check the summary -- that actually happened.) As well, it wouldn't be the first time that a junior hockey club made sure to a drop a game.
No one disputes the Fronts have enough skill to win three more elimination games, especially if Guy is in a zone. However, no one should forget why they got behind that three-games-to-none eight-ball in the first place. Not many teams are talented enough to skate on all that baggage.
Bottom line: The Fronts probably won tonight just to screw with the symmetry. It would have been perfectly symbolic if Kingston had gone down on the same night that the gold standard of the OHL, the London Knights, finished off a four-game sweep of Owen Sound. The Knights must do a wonderful job of making their own luck. London was outshot 205-126 by the Sound Attack and won in four straight, thanks in large part to goalie Steve Mason, who really seems bent on getting invited to the world junior team camp in the summer.
The Knights have also taken a forward, Matt Clarke, and turned him into a useful defenceman. Seriously, never bet against London. With their luck, you could take any random player on that team, shoot him out of a cannon and he would land in a pillow factory.
Bulls 3 67's 0 (Belleville leads series 2-1): People in Ottawa watching the Rogers 22 broadcast got a pretty good approximation of how dullsville Bellevegas is on a Thursday night -- along with Friday and Saturday, too. The Bulls, who got 22 saves from Kevin Lalande, will take it, and odds are it will take Ottawa out after Game 6.
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
