GAELS O-LINEMAN SIGNS WITH RIDERS

Just a quick Bleeding Tricolour note -- Gaels o-lineman Ryan Freeman has signed a free-agent contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Best of luck, Ryan.

Freeman will be reunited with Andy Fantuz, the former Western star now playing for the Riders. To the best of my knowledge, the two have not crossed paths since the 2002 Queen's-Western OUA semi-final when both Freeman and Fantuz were freshman starters. If memory serves, the Mustangs were so banged up in the secondary that Fantuz, who'd set a CIS receiving record straight out of high school that fall, was put in at defensive back.

On the first series, the Gaels called a draw play out of the shotgun to Freeman's side. As Bryan Crawford (now with the Argos) broke free, Ryan sprinted downfield looking for someone, anyone to block, especially a wide receiver dabbling on defence. Fantuz did a nice job of getting out of the way as Crawford and a phalanx of Tricolour blockers rumbled all the way to the end zone.

That was pretty much it for both the Mustangs and Andy Fantuz playing defence -- Queen's won 55-20. That's our story and we're sticking to it.
