Co-Blogger Neil Acharya checks in with a hockey/hip-hop tie that might have slipped through the cracks.
In February 2006, legendary hip-hop producer and Michigan native J Dilla died from complications from Lupus. Although he was just barely in his 30s he was respected and revered. Part of his legacy is that he was loved by famous artists such as Kanye West and Pharell but managed to have even the most underground fan in awe of his work.
Many tributes poured in after his death, including benefit concerts where proceeds went to the J-Dilla Foundation and also in the form of T-shirts. Around March 2006 a T-shirt emerged that borrows the winged wheel logo of the Detroit Red Wings.
The famous winged wheel was changed to a winged record -- a nice classy touch, to a classic crest. I doubt very much the artist involved in creating the shirt would have ever thought of co-opting one of the cartoonish logos which seems to be all the rage in junior hockey. So here’s a case for bringing back some classic-lookng sweaters in the OHL.
As well, I had a chance to check out ?uestlove Saturday night in Toronto. Following the Roots show he deejayed at an after-party. As ?uest rocked the crowd, you couldn’t help but notice his shirt: "Canada is Hockey."
