WOULD-BE BLUE HAS GOT SOME GAME

University of Toronto literature student Kris Newman is the Canadian champion in Madden Football 2007 after winning a 520-player tournament held in T.O. on Saturday. (See, we English majors are too good for something.)

It's a good thing he won in Madden, since the 21-year-old Newman plans to try out this summer for U of T Varsity Blues football team -- which hasn't won since October 2001 and is six losses from trying the national record losing streak.

Hey, between adding stone-cold winners such as Newman and having a new home at the refurbished Varsity Centre, the Blues' and head coach Steve Howlett's luck may be about to change. Remember back in '95 when the then-York Yeomen moved into their new stadium and promptly ended their record 47-game losing streak in the first game played there? Woe be unto my Queen's Golden Gaels if they travel to U of T for the season opener on Sept. 3 (just 195 days away).
