CIS CORNER: HERO ONE DAY, HOSPITAL THE NEXT FOR GAELS STAR

Here's how it's gone this weekend for our CIS teams of interest from the 613:

  • Queen's freshman basketball star Mitch Leger went from being the man of the hour in Friday's last-second last-second upset win over Ottawa to ending up in the hospital yesterday with stomach pains.

Talk about a little drama. Queen's is having its best men's basketball's season, well, ever, and now their best player has a health scare. As the one and only Dr. Geoff Smith puts it, the Gaels "without Mitch Leger are like Canada without Tim Horton's."

The good news for the Gaels is Leger does not have appendicitis and may even be ready to play next weekend vs. U of T and Ryerson. Meantime, there was probably no way the Gaels could have played their best yesterday against any team, let alone the Carleton Ravens, who scored an easy 77-60 win. With the 6-foot-8 Leger sidelined Carleton's Kevin McCleery set up base camp in the low post, contributing 12 points. Out on the perimeter, Stu Turnbull, wasn't at all ruffled by a fellow former Frontenac Falcon taking ill, enjoying a career night with 28 points including a five threes. Carleton is 14-0 heading into Tuesday's Capital Hoops Classic.

Now here's the good news for the Gaels: No. 10 York got blown out by 28 points against the U of T last night, so the Gaels' chances of being nationally ranked just got a little better. That's secondary, of course, to Leger's well-being.
  • Gaels guard Teddi Firmi had her second double-digit rebounding night in a row, taking down 15 boards in the women's team's 68-54 win over Carleton. The Gaels are home next weekend against the U of T and Ryerson.

(CIS Hoops Blog has the rundown on all the men's basketball action.)

ON THE ICE

  • Gananoque's Liz Kench had a hand in three third-period goals as Queen's doubled up Guelph 4-2 and strengthened its hold on second place in the OUA women's league. Ottawa native Elysia Desmier assisted on both Guelph goals.
  • U of T goalie Ryan Grinnell shaved his his goals-against average to 1.98 after a 3-0 shutout against the Queen's men. Friday, Smith Falls' Pat Doyle had three points in Queen's 7-2 win over Ryerson at, wait for it, George Bell Arena.
  • Pierre-AndrĂ© LeBlanc got the game-winner with five minutes left in the U of O's 5-2 win over McGill (the Gazoo even covered it), giving the Gee-Gees a split of a McGill-Trois Rivieres weekend.
  • Anyone notice the U of O women's squad has an all-Canadian forward named Kim Kerr who wears the old No. 12 once sported by the old Philadelphia Flyers triggerman, Tim Kerr? She had two points in the No. 5 Gee-Gees' 4-1 win over Concordia on Friday.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
