IS THIS U OF T'S WEEK?

Heading off to my real job shortly, but just a quick note that the University of Toronto Blues, losers of 37 straight games, have an early 4-0 lead over the York Lions in the University Rush game on The Score.

Spoke too soon.... York just recovered a fumble in U of T territory. Here we go again...

(UPDATE: Spoke too soon, indeed: York won in a rout, 39-11.)

Anyhow, yours truly is just twisted enough to admit this is kind of fun to watch. York is wearing red and U of T is in blue uniforms, since the game is the Red and Blue Bowl, but it almost looks like high school football, where teams only have one set of jerseys. It sounds like high school football -- after a big play, you can hear the players shouting over the crowd noise.

Some people didn't like it that a pair of o-4 teams were given a national TV spotlight, especially at the expense of the Western Mustangs homecoming game, but you have to admit that's in the somewhat egalitarian spirit of Canadian amateur sport. It's the antithesis of boring U.S. college football.

Might as well cheer for the U of T today, since the chances of a perfect week of CIS football picks went out the window since the Regina Rams' first-string defence apparently missed its flight to Vancouver. (The UBC Thunderbirds beat the Rams by a women's basketball score, 60-48.)

Back with more later. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
