SHORT SATURDAY AFTERNOON STUFF

  • If nothing else, cheer for the St. Louis Cardinals, now 1½ games ahead of the Houston Astros with two to play (the Cincinnati Reds are still alive too), to be forced into playing that makeup game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. You know how major-league teams comport themselves on the last day of the season -- everyone swinging at the first pitch, guys leaving in the sixth inning to make their flight home.

What kind of effort would the Giants put out? They might not be so concerned since they have a chance to keep the hated Dodgers out of the playoffs.
  • Remember, NCAA football is boring.
  • Much obliged to Boatmen Blog for the plug the other day.
  • As Hardball Times notes, the wild-card does assure that the league's second-best team will always make the playoffs. A four-division, split-season format (yours truly's wild idea) wouldn't necessarily assure that, but it would be more democratic.
  • Hometown Breakdown, indeed: The Kingston Frontenacs had some defensive lapses and had six straight penalty kills in a 7-6 shootout loss to who else, the Belleville Bulls. Junior hockey usually comes down to the three D's -- defence, discipline and dominant goaltending. Frontes centre Cory Emmerton has 10 points after three games; Peterborough's Daniel Ryder, though, just had 11 in his team's past two games. The league scoring title might come down to those guys.

Back with more later. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
