PAPI ... I LOVE IT WHEN YOU CALL HIM BIG PAPI

The Geek, as always, has some middle-of-the-night baseball thoughts to subject y'alls to:
  • The good news is David Ortiz' heart problems are not considered overly serious, but the bad news is that no one can really say that yet with complete certainly. How many Boston sports fans heard about Ortiz' problems and instantly thought Reggie Lewis?
  • There's going to be serious NL MVP talk surrounding Phillies slugger Ryan Howard now that he's leading the majors in homers and RBI and has tied Mike Schmidt's club record for most jacks in a single season. But Hardball Times' latest Win Shares (updated Monday) shows that Howard is no better than the 10th-best player in the National League. As of nowish, is the NL MVP ballot should go 1) Carlos Beltran 2) Albert Pujols 3) Miguel Cabrera.
  • Right now, the Blue Jays (5-2 losers in Cleveland last night) are like your kid when he screws up royally. You're not upset, you're just disappointed, and in a couple days you'll be ready to love them again and hold them just a little tighter. I hope this makes you all drop everything and call your mothers, by the way.
  • The Kansas City Royals have won nine of their last 13 games against teams that are in first or second place, meaning they can no longer be considered the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked. And these aren't your church-picnic National League first or second-place teams that are only within three games of .500. These are real baseball teams.
  • A 2-1 loss to Mexico last night -- both runs unearned -- dropped Canada to 2-2 at the Americas Olympic baseball qualifying tournament in Havana. The Canucks, who play Brazil in their last first-round game today, will now likely finish third in their pool instead of second. All that amounts to is playing the Cubans one day earlier in the next round.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
