SHORT SATURDAY AFTERNOON POST

"And now, Avis Rent-A-Car is proud to present the second-best band in America. Will you welcome Garfunkel, Messina, Oates, and Lisa singing their number-two hit, 'Born to Runner-up.'"
"Wait, why would they come to our concert just too boo us?"

Only time for a short post this fine afternoon.

NHL PLAYOFFS
  • Not much to say about Carolina's series-tying 4-0 win last night, other than to note goaltending switches often aren't a cure-all. It's typical to see the goalie's numbers look like a presidential candidate's for the first 48 hours after winning the nomination. Seeing Martin Gerber in net wasn't as surprising as seeing the Sabres come out so flat, but you have to wonder if the injuries on defence have taken their toll on Buffalo.
  • It turns out the Oilers' Dwayne Roloson was a little under the weather during Game 4 of the Oilers-Ducks series on Thursday. James Mirtle noted that the big difference in Anaheim was that the kiddie corps -- Ryan Getzlaf, Joffrey Lupul and Dustin Penner, all born-and-raised Westerners -- all played much better than they had earlier in the series. My gut feeling: Anaheim will squeeze out another win.

OTHER BUSINESS

  • Jays manager John Gibbons is nothing if not creative. Last night, he gave Troy Glaus his first-ever start at shortstop. Sounds a lot like what his former Mets manager Davey Johnson would have done, or what Earl Weaver did in Baltimore when Johnson played there. (Weaver once even put Eddie Murray at third base so he could get another home-run hitter in the lineup.) I've made note of the Gibbons-Johnson-Weaver connection previously (it's in the middle of an extended running diary, trust me), but the MSM hasn't picked up on this.
  • Lastly, all you fans of The O.C., Bill Simmons offers a grim picture of Mischa Barton's post-Marissa Cooper career arc:

I see her taking a stab at a movie career and competing with the Jessicas
(Biel and Alba) for a couple of years, followed by at least one bad horror movie, followed by the inevitable comeback to TV that doesn't work (a bad sitcom where she works in a bar or something), and then a couple more badmovies, and maybe even one more bad TV show, and then a dramatic 2014 appearance in the straight-to-DVD erotic thriller "Illicit Betrayal 4," where she plays a detective who gets lured into the world of high-class prostitution while investigating the murder of a hooker, at least until the detective's ex-boyfriend and partner (played by Wilmer Valderrama) saves the day.
By the way, does anyone remember that pre-O.C., Barton's biggest role was a supporting part in the 2001 Canadian coming-of-age drama Lost and Delirious? Given that film's surfeit of same-sex snogging between Jessica Paré and Piper Perabo, Mischa might have got lost in the shuffle. I'm just sayin' ....

That's all for now. Enjoy your Saturday.
