Sentenced to the Island ...

No doubt a lot of in-the-know people were aware what Ontario Hockey League player was convicted of manslaughter in the death of 15-year-old Manny Castillo in a high school rugby game two years ago.

Long story short, the player received a year's probation and 100 hours' community service. Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act is what is, so one cannot say explicitly who it was. Apparently it was decided that being drafted by a certain NHL team was punishment enough. Suffice to say, if you do not want to know who the player was, do not visit Chris Botta's blog.

(Update: Does it need to be explained that it was a joke to say being drafted by a certain NHL team is punishment enough?)

Quite a bit of propaganda on CB's blog.

1. Implying that it was during a tackle in the course of the game when the referee clearly testified that the play was long over and the action causing death took place when the ball had already been passed away and a new phase of action had begun.

2. Mentioning the sympathetic comments of the Castillo family but conveniently ignoring that those were right after the incident and at a time when the media was reporting it as a freak accident after a tackle. They have since changed their tune and were firmly behind the prosecution of the offender.

3. Implying that it was self-defence when the judge completely ridiculed that line of defence in his decision.

4. The implication that somehow Castillo was at fault for playing when he supposedly had suffered a serious concussion, a strawman argument that was put to rest long ago.

5. Implying that the conflicting testimony somehow made the vents of that day impossible to judge. The only conflicting testimony came from the defendant and some his friends/teammates. The most objective person there, the ref, agreed completely with the testimony of the Lorne Park coach and players.

Let's face it, if he wasn't a hockey player, no sympathy card would have been played and the supposedly mitigating factors would have been ridiculed in the media if they were even addressed at all.

However, Canada's "boys will be occasional felons" attitude towards violence committed by hockey players, he gets to play the victim, too.

Very good points. Thanks for not getting me dans merde by mentioning the player by name. The young man in question is awfully lucky.

Hey Oolf- you linked to this quiet little blog of yours presumably because you wanted Islanders fans to read it. And now at least one of us has. Your unprovoked negative comments about the Islanders and your adamant refusal to back up a single scrap of your words regarding their draft pick with any viable sources whatsoever makes your words essentially worthless. So, thanks for nothing.

So you're morally outraged at the content you paid nothing to obtain.

The point was obvious — point people toward a source if they wanted to know about the junior player convicted in the Castillo case (whom Canadian media outlets by law cannot identify). There was nothing else to it.

It was a gentle dig; whatever team just finished dead last is going to get them. Maybe next year Garth Snow can draft you a sense of humour and perspective.

For your information, Sager- a sense of humor is not going to make someone showing up out of nowhere, posting completely unsourced data, and electing to call us all “imbeciles” funny. If you find that humorous, thats your issue. I on the other hand find those things to be the mark of low-class, worthless journalism. But, by all means- if your personal standards are that low, laugh away.

Is "refusal to back up a single scrap of your words" based on my comment that starts this thread?

If so, I suggest you read the many articles about the trial at the Toronto Star or Globe and Mail web sites.

No, its based on comment #73 here:

Just to let you know I have read a lot about this, actually.

@ TheMetalChick: For the record, I don't find that funny. You had also best not be accusing me of leaving that comment.

I use my real name if I'm commenting at another site (here's a recent example).

The comment which raised your ire is, in fact, word-for-word similar to the first comment on this post, which was left by an anon. user. A user on Point Blank (how do we even know it's the same person?) opted to use "oolf" as an ID and link back to this site.

That was that user's decision. I am not her/his keeper. Thanks for sharing your heartfelt concern.

Looks like, with the exception of the introduction, the "oolf" user on islanderspointblank has copied my comment, word for word. I have no idea who it was but it was neither Mr. Sager nor myself.

I found the reply to the plagiarized comments on the other forum interesting. There was a request for sources yet no one seems to be asking for sources to back up Chris' original post.

Uhhhh it's unprovoked to say that being drafted by one of the worst run franchises in sports of the last 25 years is a punishment?

You're probably not familiar with Canada's Young Offenders Act but Neate cannot write the draft picks name. That's why you won't get anyone giving you direct citations naming the Islanders pick. However, it doesn't take an Islanders fan to connect the dots. Or maybe it does apparently.

Either way, your sense of justice should be more inflamed about how a hockey player in Canada once again got away with the "that's the game" defence.

Pension Plan Puppets, of COURSE I am aware of that- apparently you didnt notice, but I have been respecting it as well and I have not used the draft picks name out of respect since this site is Canadian-based.

What I was referring to, as I have already explained, was a post over on Point Blank. Someone used a name, represented himself to us by linking his own name to this site, called us imbeciles, and blathered without anything to back any of it up. I made it clear THAT is what upset a number of us.

Sager, I understand what happened now. Thank you very much for clearing it up. If you say anonymous or oolf or whatever do not represent you or your site, that is good enough for me.

Oh- and a big blow it out your *** to anyone who will not link to their own site instead of someone elses. Its so lame.

What CB put up was an interview with the kid himself, we can SEE where THAT is coming from. We are not stupid, obviously what CB put up is what the kid was OK with putting there. But random "facts" with nothing to back them up are not helping anyone understand anything, its just- nothing.

Anonymous said...

Once again where have the "facts" in the original article been sourced?

Where is the source for the conflicting testimony over the "tackle"?

Where is the source for the injury being the result of a head injury?

Where is the source for the report that Castillo had suffered a serious concussion?

Where is the source for Manuel Castillo's statement?

Where is the source that the Castillo's asked that the offender be spared punishment?

Let me make it clear, I am not claiming that all of these statements are false but neither are you claiming all of mine are false. Why is my list of "random facts with nothing to back them up" not helping anyone understand anything yet CB's facts do not require similar scrutiny?
