Notes on our teams/athletes of interest from The 613 ...
The OUA announced its football all-stars just now ... with tongue planted firmly in cheek, if anyone wants to suggest that in the future, this can wait until after the Yates Cup, the conch is yours. The fact that Queen's could be some awesomely good as far as the all-star picks goes, with 16 selections ... ah, it makes your lips numb just thinking about it and that is coming from a guy who only experienced it vicariously.
(Western had five first-team picks and six guys on the second team.)
Golden Gaels: Queen's ended up with 10 first-teamers and six more second-team selections. Centre Dan Bederman, QB Dan Brannagan, guard Vince DeCivita, tailback Mike Giffin and wideout Scott Valberg were chosen from the offence.
Three-quarters of the D-line -- bookends Neil Puffer and Osie Ukwuoma, tackle Dee Sterling -- were chosen along with Thaine Carter at linebacker, and Jimmy Allin was the first-team kick returner. Dan Village at placekicker, Chris Smith at linebacker, Allin at cornerback and defensive halfback David Rooney, Tim Poffley as a special-teamer and tackle Colin Boyle, who's from Ottawa, are on the second team.
(Our man at The Merc has some issues with Puffer over Grant McDonald as first-team defensive end. McDonald was not selected at all.
Gee-Gees: Only one first-team pick, Frank Spera as the left guard, but they're also playing this week. Cyril Adjeity, as an inside receiver, Ian Hazlett and Sébastien Tétreault from the defensive line and outside linebacker Mike Cornell were second-team picks.

Not sure I understand Jimmy Allin not getting the nod for first team... THe guy played every position on defence this year and shut down whoever he was up against...
Yeah, I didn't want editorialize too much, especially since Queen's made out very well ... but I thought Number 16 (and for part of one game, Number 15) was one of the most impressive D-backs in the league.
Part of the issue might have been that he split time between corner and halfback.
When we picked a high school all-star team at one small paper I worked at, we had an "iron man" player ... someone who maybe didn't have the best year at a particular spot, but was just a solid player.
Personally, I'd rather have that in the OUA than a punter and a placekicker.
