Raptors swing the big deal

It appears it's a done deal between the Raptors and Indiana Pacers — all-star Jermaine O'Neal for T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, the 17th overall pick and a player to be named later.

It's a challenge trade, to be sure — the Pacers need a point guard and the Raptors, well god knows they need some jam in the low post, a tag-team partner for Chris Bosh. Ball Don't Lie figures they need another reserve big man. What does that say about Andrea Bargnani?

Know why the NBA makes teams wait to announce these trades? That's a test to see if the local sportswriter knows his principals from his principles. Ford and O'Neal are the principals in a deal that's been agreed to in principle.

Not TOTALLY swung yet, according to ESPN:

Ford's contract makes him a "base-year compensation" player, meaning the trade cannot be completed until July 9.

In all likelihood the Raps will make the selection at 17 based on what Indiana tells them. This trade then, basically, is not official yet it can only be agreed to in principle (which from all reports it has been now).

This move solves the Rebound/presence question down low...they've lost a lot of their bargaining chips but I get the feeling that there's still another move coming for a swingman, as Colangelo said he was going after a Big and a Swingman after the season came to an end

To Indiana:
TJ FORD
RASHO NESTEROVIC
MACEO BASTON
17th Pick

To Toronto:
JERMAINE O'NEAL
41st Pick

This is how it's looking now, so the Raps have retained a selection - just wonder now what they're going to do with it...

Lastly about Bargnani - this actually works out great for him! He may be moved in whatever deal is coming up next, but if not he gets to come off the bench, likely returning to his original position (the PF position), but if not he's at Center but against the opponents scrubs which is much better for his case in the middle.

The reason so many have shot down Andrea this season was because they moved him to C when he's never played there (played SF w/ Italy and PF rookie season), he was undersized and didn't know the position that well and tanked.

I think Bargs turns around this season, and personally I hope the Raps hold onto him he will be a great player. Bargs would be a GREAT edition either coming off the bench or starting at SF alongside Bosh and O'Neal (damn that'd be a tall lineup!)

O'Neal down low, Bosh spotting up from 12-15 feet and Bargs on the wing stretching the D.... that sounds pretty good.
