A man named Dick Pound doesn't need Viagra

The New York Daily News' latest Roger Clemens revelations -- he, among others, apparently have been popping Viagra in order to improve their on-field performances -- also manages to make sport of Canada's favourite former IOC second-in-command:
"Catlin said he even wrote a letter several years ago to then-WADA chairman Dick Pound, notifying him that Viagra might be a doping agent.

"The e-mail got bounced back by Pound's offensive-content filter, which thought it was spam."

Obviously, this is just a coincidence. It's just that Dick Pound has a tendency to come across as a wee bit insufferable. That makes it fun to say that Pound might have eradicated this particular bit of doping years tago, if only it wasn't for those damn spambots sending messages about Viagra. It's never Pound's fault, you know.

I know personalities shouldn't affect how one feels on the issues, but the fact that it is Dick Pound leading the charge on the anti-doping crusade makes me much less supportive of it. What really infuriated me about Pound was when he started picking numbers out of thin air regarding the NHL. (Remember the infamous 1/3 comment?) He had absolutely nothing to back that up, and to smear that many guys without some clear evidence was, to me, a gross abuse of his office. On the rare occasions he isn't going out of his way to pick fights and glory seek, Pound makes some very good points regarding doping in sports. No one is in the mood to listen anymore, unfortunately, because they got tired of Pound's incredibly annoying personal style. If ever there was a cause that needed a new spokesperson, it's that one. (Hey, I hear Lance Armstrong is available...)
