CIS Corner: Gaels DB has distinguished Pyears

It did not escape notice that a Queen's Golden Gaels footballer, defensive back Jimmy Allin, was named city athlete of the year for Belleville, the hometown of our own Duane Rollins, who of course is a Laurier Golden Hawks loyalist.

That's almost as good as breaking into the Quinte Mall in the middle of the night and raising the Tricolour flag so it can be seen by all the drivers passing between Toronto and Kingston. Oddly enough, no Belleville Bulls hockey player has ever received the award, but in 2000 it went to a Kingston Frontenac, Andrew Raycroft, whose whereabouts are presently unknown.

True, the only two-time winner of the award actually was a quarterback for Laurier, Ryan Pyear, but -- how soon they forget -- the local Intel identified him today as a former "McMaster University football star." (That would have been his brother, Kyle Pyear, who was good enough to keep Jesse Lumsden in a platoon role during his run with the Marauders and won the honour himself in 2002. There haven't been many 5-foot-10, 175-lb. guys who were more entertaining than Ryan was during his years at Laurier.)

Anyways, Allin's triumph almost makes up for that '03 semi-final. For the 900th time, "kick it over the bar."

But he's from Corbyville! Shenanigans! Shenanigans!

Corbyville is in Belleville now. You can blame Mike Harris for that.

Oh, and...

Give the Intelligencer a break. It's not like it's easy to keep track of all 27 Pyear brothers. (I'm pretty sure there was an OUA rule at one point that every team had to have at least one!)

Ah, it was a honest mistake on their part.

I believe every OUA team had a Pyear except Queen's and Toronto.

I know you are all joking, but...

He was the Vanier Cup MVP for God's sake. IN 2005!

And, it wasn't as if the intern wrote that story, it was Paul Svoboda who should damn well know where Ryan Pyear went to school.

There were three Pyeras BTW - Ryan, Kyle and Toby (Waterloo). Papa Pyear coached at WLU as well.

I have ve said that Ryan Pyear a favourite player from my years watching O-QIFC/OUA football, and I've followed teams that had some pretty accomplished quarterbacks -- or played against them twice a year.

You had a pretty good one right there in K-town. I would have loved to see Tommy with an offensive line.

It beggars language to describe the hush that would come over Richardson Stadium when Tom would take a hard shot and slowly pull himself to his feet.

As a WLU alumni (80, 91) (now living in Belleville and having to put up with Svoboda and the Intell swill) I hate the rebranding of Wilfrid Laurier University to Laurier - probably done because nobody in English Canada could spell Wilfrid correctly (including the WLU football team on a banner they held up in the nationally televised Octoberfest parade!) I kid you not.

The school that produced The Legendary Chris Thomas -- although it was Waterloo Lutheran back then -- rates much better treatment.
