Sometimes, it feels like the message boards are a bit more trustworthy than the paid press when it comes to reporting on junior hockey.
It shouldn't be that way, of course, but it might be with trade rumours. The OHL obsessives at rinkratmag.com don't have to worry about accountability and sources. In an odd way, that adds credibility, since one is able to sound like they are telling unvarnished, black-and-white truth. The legitimate press are stuck with the shades-of-grey.
So when it's reported that Soo Greyhounds will trade their first-round pick from Kingston, centre Jordan Mayer, to the Mississauga-St. Michael's Majors in exchange for Matt Caria, one reaction is, Hey, the guys on the message board already dissected this and panned it; it's not happening. At the same time, you won't really believe it until it's in the newspaper.
(According to the same thread, second-year Frontenacs centre Nathan Moon "might not want to be in Kingston anymore" and Mayer would report to the Frontenacs.)
