OTTAWA NEEDS LAUGHTER

When Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien started to gain momentum during last fall's election campaign, surely someone, somewhere was reminded of the Simpsons episode when Sideshow Bob successfully runs for mayor of Springfield. After Bob wins, Bart and Lisa reveal that circumstances of the election weren't on the level.

Now this happens. It is in a smartass' self-interest to hope he's cleared, since well, Mayor Lare makes it so easy on this end.

This has nothing to do with Mayor O'Brien, but I wanted to express my favourite part of that episode: Sideshow Bob's PSA's...

"Mayor Quimby supports revolving door prisons. Mayor Quimby even released Sideshow Bob -- a man twice convicted of attempted murder. Can you trust a man like Mayor Quimby? Vote Sideshow Bob for mayor."

Now that's comedy.

Birch Barlow was a hilarious one-off character, but I couldn't tell if he based on a real person or not.
