IT'S NOT YOU RAY, IT'S OTTAWA (TO A CERTAIN EXTENT)

Chris Stevenson brings word that Sens goalie Ray Emery had back problems after, get this, throwing the baseball around on Sunday afternoon.

Naturally, some Senators fans will not take the Rayzer at his word. Never mind that any weekend warrior can relate to playing a sport outside its normal season, overdoing it and regretting it the next day. (Of course, we're not getting paid to play goal for the Ottawa Senators.)

There's just too much history piling up around Emery in Hockey Country. As previously noted, it will make many Sens fans treat this like something you might step on the shoulder of the road after pulling over to check the damage and exchange insurance information following a fender-bender. (Sorry, bad analogy, Ray.)

"Emery can flat-out play goal and it seems like the Sens have realized to live and let live. The point is that he's a marked man in the Ottawa region, playing for a small-market team and his tastes and how he lives will always be brought into the story quicker" — by fans first, than the media second — "than with anyone else, especially if his game slips. It begs a question: Why would he (Emery) want to keep being an African-Canadian in a white team sport in a very white-bread city?

"Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You'll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you'll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob." - Crash Davis

Basically, Ray can do whatever he wants as long as he is winning. Look at last year in the playoffs - he was an hour late for that flight, and got into an accident on the way, yet his adoring public didn't bat an eye. Why? Because he was on a roll, and he was winning. People found the car accident "colourful". When you aren't producing, though, that stuff gets old in a hurry.

Bottom line -- Ray needs to get healthy and start winning some games. Then he can go back to being a flaky goalie/young goofball.
