CIS CORNER: GIBB-ING THE GGs AND RAVENS NIGHTMARES

Notes on our teams of interest from The 613...

HOCKEY

  • Gaels: Seriously, it's like Queen's borrowed from the late-'90s Buffalo Sabres playbook -- they swept in Ottawa despite being outshot 82-41 across two games. Brady Morrison stopped 37-of-38 in the Gaels' 5-1 win over Carleton on Saturday; Ryan Gibb had a 44-save shutout Friday in a 2-0 win over Ottawa.

When was the last time Queen's and RMC were both above .500 this far into the season? It hasn't happened.

It was a nice win for the Tricolour women on Friday -- Queen's won 3-1 over UOIT in a 'home' game in Napanee. No player had a multi-point night, so everyone was in on it; Kelsey Thomson, Mary McNeill and Chantelle Johnson were the goal scorers.
  • Ravens: There's some character in the Carleton room, judging by the scores; Friday's 4-3 shootout win over RMC continued their record of having never won a game by more than a goal. Going by the numbers, Carleton seems to lack a finisher, but until Saturday they had been in virtually ever game.
  • Gee-Gees: Amherstview native Nick Vernelli scored the game-winner as U of O got a big bounce-back win on Saturday, 3-2 over RMC, to get a split. It sets up a nice pair of return games next weekend in Kingston.

Hat tip to the U of O women for ending McGill's shutout streak -- Lauryn Lepello scored 3:10 into Saturday's game to end a 600-minute scoreless skein by Charline Labonte. The Martlets did end up winning the game 5-1.

HOOPS

  • Gaels: Lovin' this team, thy name is... Queen's split against a pair of strong OUA West teams, losing by five to Guelph on Saturday (67-62) after a comeback win over Brock on Friday. It was a promising enough start; the Gaels shoot 30 per cent from three instead of the 5-of-23 they did shoot, and they beat Guelph. Mitch Leger had 17 points in Saturday's game.
  • Gee-Gees: It's kind of like the emergence of Dax Dessureault in the post and Donnie Gibson as a gunner and more aggressive defender has led to small forward Sean Peter getting less acclaim; well, he had 19 points and game highs of 12 rebounds and three steals in a decisive win over McMaster on Saturday. Mac, like the Gee-Gees, is retooling a bit and it hit a dead spot in the third quarter, when the U of O had a decisive 18-0 run.

Gibson had 19 points (5-of-7 on threes) and Josh Gibson-Bascombe put up 23.

From reading cishoops.ca it sounds like it the U of O's 68-56 win over Lakehead on Friday was choppier than the waters of nearby Lake Superior, but whatever, they'll take it.
  • Ravens: How about Stu Turnbull coming back with a 20-point night in Carleton's 82-52 win over Lakehead, one night after he was shut out? The Ravens held their first two opponents to 28% shooting. That shorter shot clock is their best friend, as Dave Smart noted in the Citizen last week.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.

22-2 in the third period? I've heard of the hometown shot advantage but that's ridiculous.

Ride with the hot goalie and just play defence... I think the Queen's coaches must have showed them tape of the Sweden-USA Olympic women's semi-final before the game.

And a 5-1 thrashing of Carleton gives the Gaels 4 straight wins. They had 8 total through 28 games last year, and currently have 6 through only 11 games. Looking like an amazing year is shaping up.

But who have they played? (Don't have time to check it out for myself.)
