UP AT 6: FIND ANOTHER ROUTE TO HAPPINESS

As you were kicking the tires...
  • Why would anyone be eager to see O.J. Simpson go to prison? How bad is your life that O.J. going to jail would make you feel better about the world? Modest suggestion: Go read a book, possibly to a small child. Take a long walk. Call up an older relative you only see at holidays and funerals.
  • Damon Allen has echoed some of Donovan McNabb's sentiments about the harsher judgments African-American quarterbacks face, telling globesports.com there are "prejudices out there that keep us from being the quarterbacks we could be in the eyes of the public." (Emphasis mine.)

A classic example was 2 1/2 years ago, before McNabb's Eagles faced Michael Vick's Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game. A columnist wrote that the Eagles would have their hands full against Vick -- but the same Eagles had advanced that far by shutting down a top-ranked Minnesota Vikings offence led by Daunte Culpepper, who had only set a NFL record for total offence that season. (And how many even remember Culpepper set that record, relative to how many people remember Peyton Manning throwing 49 touchdown passes?)
  • Kingston's own Kip Brennan, trying to make the New York Islanders, duked it out (very briefly) with the Bruins' Zdeno Chara last night.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.

Come now, Neate -- why shouldn't people be anxious to see O.J. in jail? Wanting to see a double murderer behind bars doesn't make someone a redneck, a bigot, or a fascist. O.J. murdered two people in cold blood, and got away with it. You know it, I know it, and the rest of the world knows it. There are ZERO mitigating factors behind that one. This is a little like getting Al Capone for tax evasion -- it's not what he should have been nailed for, but it will do under the circumstances.

I have no problem with the Cowboys signing Tank Johnson, so this isn't me on some kind of a vendetta against black athletes. I am, however, somewhat insistent that double murderers get put behind bars where they belong.

I'm with Dennis, The Juice got away with double murder and I hope he spends many, many days in prison for this latest episode.

I read today that Marcia Clark was in the courthouse for the bail hearing, she is a "reporter" for Entertainment Tonight. Is it just me or is that funny?

As for Tank Johnson, I'm with Dennis again. I don't think athletes should be treated any differently by their employers than the rest of us. Tank Johnson got busted, was tried, sentenced, end of story. I don't even care if they do illegal drugs, in the larger scheme of things why should we care if pro athletes smoke pot? This false morality in sports is a bunch of hooey (sic?).

I think the same of Vick. Once he serves his time I think he should be allowed to earn a living in his profession just as anyone else in the "land of the free and the home of the brave" would be allowed.

Take in the spirit it was meant in, guys.... the whole absurdity of saying, "I hope he goes to jail." How does seeing O.J. go to the clinker really change anyone's life?

I didn't care about Paris Hilton going to jail, I wouldn't care about O.J. either. It has no impact on my day-to-day.

I think they will be hard pressed to keep Vick out of the NFL, just on a legal basis. They can't deny the guy an opportunity to make a living. The guy is going to jail and losing millions of dollars, not to mention a minimum of two precious years of the prime of his career. For as much as I find Vick's activities disgusting, that is a pretty harsh punishment in and of itself.

True story -- in doing research for a Canadian Senate Committee report on border security, they found that fully 15% of waterfront employees in the Port of Montreal had a criminal record. If they are allowed to work, then so too is Michael Vick! :-)

N, OJ going to jail won't change my life either but he is guilty of a double homicide. I do get your point though ( I think ) that our interest in celebrity culture ( Paris i.e.) is way out of whack and I am in agreement.

As for Vick, I think the NFL will assess the zeitgeist (sic?) in America come his release from prison and then decide whether or not to punish him futher. If they do punish him further it will ostensibly be for breaking the conduct rules of NFL personnel re. gambling, not the dog fighting thing.

If you want some salacious sports news get into the Isiah Thomas and Harold Reynolds trials....

Yeah, the Isiah trial is just nuts... especially when it seems like the head honcho at MSG just decided to fire Anucha Browne Sanders when he knew she had a sexual harassment complaint against the company.
