UP AT 6: NEW ORLEANS HAS BIG MO

Careful man, there's a beverage there.

  • Fare thee well, Mo Peterson: The long-time Raptors swingman has signed with the New Orleans Hornets. It's for the best for MoPete, since his main competition for floor time and touches will be Peja Stojaković, who's going to start moving like the Tin Man any day now.
  • Barry Bonds' mistress, Kimberly Bell (pictured), is going to be in Playboy. This is a shock -- Playboy is still publishing?
  • My Minnesota Vikings were the first up for the Deadspin NFL team preview treatment. Cherish it, since the Vikes might not be first for anything again until the 2008 NFL draft.
  • This is a few days old, but Leafs forward Darcy Tucker is playing himself in a few episodes of Little Mosque on The Prairie next season.
  • NFL commish Roger Goodell has told Mike Vick to make himself scarce for training camp, which is the right move for the league and the Atlanta Falcons. It's still hilarious, though, to see who believes they have a claim on moral high ground.

There's U.S. Senator and one-time Ku Klux Klan member Robert Byrd saying, "I am confident that the hottest places in hell are reserved for the souls of sick and brutal people who hold God's creatures in such cruel and brutal contempt.'' Don't worry, Senator, they might even get the space right next to some of your old pals.

How about Sen. John Kerry, who infamously voted for the illegal and ill-conceived invasion of Iraq in 2003, now acting like dogfighting was the crime of the century? It's also odd and off-putting that the people from PETA, who have the purest of intentions, only picket the NFL and the Falcons' offices. It's hard to create a new and better world fro downtown Manhattan and bucolic suburbia.
  • Jon Lester gets the win in his first start with the Red Sox since being diagnosed with lymphoma. It's a helluva story, but don't worry, Red Sox Nation is not known to be self-aggrandizing.
  • The Ottawa Fury released its the sked for this weekend's W-League conference finals at Keith Harris Stadium. The Fury play the winner of Wednesday's Laval-Toronto game on Saturday at 5 p.m. That follows the other division final between the Washington Freedom and the winner of a Northern Virginia-Jersey match. The final is Sunday at 5 p.m.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.

Hey, you be nice to John Kerry! He was for dog fighting before he was against it.

I see the difference as being this -- reasonable people can disagree on the Iraq War. Like Vietnam surely was more than a generation ago, it is a bitter and polarizing debate to be sure, but there are arguments to be made on both sides. I just can't see where you can make an argument for dog fighting, no matter how hard you try.

As for Senator Byrd's past, he has long since renounced the Klan, and apologized profusely for his membership in it as a young man. Racism makes my skin crawl, and organized racism like that practised by the KKK and the Nazis actually makes my physically nauseous. I have a difficult time contemplating hatred on that scale. Many young people, however, were caught up in those two respective organizations due to how pervasively strong they were in the communities in which they grew up. If you wanted to fit in and gain social acceptance, you joined, or in many cases were involuntarily signed up by your parents or other relatives. It was a different era, one that we just can't grasp today.

Oh, and if you want to get a little glimpse into what the attitudes were like back then, even here, just go tour a Canadian retirement home and poll the residents what they think of Madame Jean being our Governor General. You'll get some reactions that will shock you, I guarantee it.

Well, if there's a 10-point hierarchy of things you can find out a person that would make you hate her or him, being in the KKK, is probably right between 9 and 10. If that's me imposing my 21st-century values, so be it -- as a Gen Xer I've had the other generation impose their values on me quite enough.

"Homer, once someone apologizes for something, you can't keep throwing it in their face."
"Ahhhhh.... what a gyp."

This is the first time I have seen Kimberly Bell. How disappointing! I would think that one of the advantages to being Barry Bonds is that you would have a super hot mistress but I was way wrong! Can Playboy airbrush this into something hot??

Anyway, I can't respect her and her like, i.e Robin Givens. They are golddiggers (sic?) plain and simple. By the same token, it is impossible to feel sorry for the likes of Barry Bonds and Mike Tyson.
