Port Dover, Ont., pitcher John Axford earned his first win since joining the Yankees organization last night. Axford threw three scoreless innings in the Staten Island Yankees' 3-2 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats in a New York-Penn League game. The right-hander didn't walk anybody and struck out out Tri-City's 3-4-5 hitters in his his final inning, the eighth. That was one of a pair of three-up, three-down innings for Axford.
It wasn't a bad weekend for ballplayers from Port Dover: Megan Timpf was on Canada's team that won a silver medal in women's fastpitch at the Pan-Am Games.
