THESE THINGS WE (NEED TO) BELIEVE

Replace "soccer" with "hockey" and "Englishmen" with "Canadians" and this Steven Wells column from the Guardian Unlimited would come out about the same.

This is germane to a tired theme that was played out during the Stanley Cup final. It's understandable why the Canadian media bags on the Yanks for their general lack of hockey savvy (it has to do with "Stanley Cup" and "since 1993"). There are a lot of Americans who do get the game, though, and it would be a lot better to hear about that instead of sending reporters to interview random local yokels. However, that doesn't serve-slash-perpetuate the national inferiority complex, does it?
