To paraphrase The Dude, the Lynx don't need our effin' sympathy, they need some friggin' home runs.
A saga like last night's 4-3, 10-inning loss (boxscore, play-by-play) in the second leg of tonight's double dose of Durham is cue-the-violins stuff.
It's an old story by now, but with cool temperatures and the Senators' season hanging in the balance, less than 900 fans turned out for a double-dip of Durham. The Lynx (25-30) had decent enough pitching and rapped out 14 hits in the second game, which should be enough to win, but 12 were singles, plus Durham was able to get a double play — five of 'em, all told — whenever it was in a tight spot. The Bulls got all six of their runs on the night via the long ball, including Justin Ruggiano's homer on Joe Bisenius' second pitch of the 10th. Oh well, they're pros, and tomorrow is another day.
Lynx righty Zack Segovia (1-6, 4.60, 1.47 WHIP) is to face Durham righty Jason Hammel (3-5, 3.15, 1.11 WHIP) tonight at 6:05.
Lefty Eude Brito's four strong innings was a Lynx highlight in Durham's 2-0 win (boxscore, play-by-play) in the first game. Brito, who threw 57 pitches, continued to stretch out his arm and (more to the point) the tender groin which limited him for much of the season. The Lynx had their best chance in the fifth when Durham's Mitch Talbot (5-5, 5.16 after the seven-inning shutout) whiffed Joe Thurston with two on and two out. Matt Smith (2-1, 2.57) got the 'L' when the Bulls' Joel Guzman hit a first-pitch-swinging two-run homer in the final inning.
