A DEBATE THAT NEVER FLAGS...

Someone (beyond our man Jean-Pierre Allard) was bound to say it:

"... anyone else sick and tired of the jingoistic tone taken by Don Cherry, supported by his doormat Ron MacLean, on Hockey Night In Canada?

"It's simplistic and embarrassing, no matter what one's view of political policy. Canadians are the first to criticize jingoistic U.S. TV coverage of the Olympics, yet we tolerate this nonsense every Saturday night during the regular hockey season and every second night during the playoffs."

Bill Bean, Take The Lane blog, Waterloo Region Record

It would grate a lot less if the People's Network let the other side have its say on HNIC. Somehow, it's doubtful we'll see Cpl. Matthew Dinning's parents talking with Cherry and MacLean about military death benefits if the Senators stay alive to host Game 6 of the Cup final on Saturday. It was different back in the day. One Saturday night in the 1960s when Ward Cornell was host, the Prime Minister -- either Diefenbaker or Pearson -- was spotted at a game and was interviewed, more or less on the spur of the momet. The next Saturday, by a CBC equal-time edict, the Opposition leader (again, either Pearson or Diefenbaker) was interviewed.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
