SO THIS IS HOW IT FEELS FROM THE OTHER SIDE..

Turns out we're not so crazy:

"The fiasco involving the Sabres-Sens game was deliberate. It is a way for the NHL to prove to us that we need to eliminate OT and go straight to the shootout. It is too coincidental that the talking heads have decided to complain about double OT and then this happens."
-- Mirtle commenter, May 23

"(Overtime is) unique and special and spectacular.

"And yet, the NHL might want to tinker with it, gimmick it up and get it over with sooner?

"And that's where I fear the 'Preakness Game' might go from humorous debacle to a tool to make another change to the sport's long-standing tradition.

"That the league officials will cite NBC's skittishness concerning open-ended overtime games and the humiliation of Saturday to claim, once again, that the sport needs to find a way to appeal to American television."
-- Dan Wetzel, "Don't Overreact," Yahoo! Sports, May 22

"Who thinks this debacle where the NHL cut away from the Sabres-Senators overtime on Saturday for its Triple Crown horse racing coverage more than a hour before the race actually started might have been the residue of (unintelligent) design? Follow the U.S. TV money the NHL is chasing.

"Is it a shock that during a playoff spring where there's been a running debate over changing post-season overtime to better suit the needs of American TV, that one of the NHL's TV partners would do this?"
-- Out of Left Field, May 20

I know conspiracy theories are a lot of fun, but I'm not buying this one. Bettman has said flat out on every occasion he has been asked that the League has no intention of messing with the OT format. Like him or not, he's no fool, and he knows that tinkering with OT would enrage the purists. And for what? Two or three games each Spring? Some things are worth fighting over, and some aren't -- even if he wanted to change it, Bettman's smart enough to stay away from that fight.
