LYNX DO THE PITCHING SHUFFLE

Righty Rick Bauer got the win for the Lynx in last night's 9-7 decision (boxscore, play-by-play) in Charlotte since he pitched the fifth inning after lefty J.A. Happ couldn't stay in the game long enough to qualify for the victory.

From a fan's perspective, what might happen with Bauer and Happ now that righty Bubba Nelson (2-1, 1.76. 0.95 WHIP in Double-A) has been called up from Reading to replace Heath Totten is a fun guessing game. Bauer's a starter normally, but he's been pitching long relief. Happ's going through that typical young pitcher's phases where he's struggling to get outs and go deep into games. He's given up four earned runs in four starts in a row and has worked past the sixth inning only once.

The plan could be to put Bauer in the rotation and have Nelson relieve in Ottawa. It wouldn't make much sense for him to return to the bullpen in Reading, which is where he began the season.

Meantime, one would be remiss not to mention that the Lynx hitters -- who now put up crooked numbers on the board or nothing at all -- had another good night, putting up a six-spot in the third off Charlotte's Vladimir Nunez (1-6) and getting three tack-on runs to decide the game in the eighth. Jim Rushford hiked his on-base percentage north of .400 and had a big two-run double in that third inning.

It goes without saying that Rushford and Gary Burnham are the only players in the Interational League with no homers and a .400-plus OBP. Crazy.

For readers wondering what Brett Myers' injury with the big club means to the Lynx, Ottawa Lynx Blog has a post up saying it's more likely the Phillies will call up Double-A left-hander Mike Zagurski.

Who will the Phillies call up to replace Brett Myers? Did you see him grabbing his shoulder last nite? Didn't look good.

Coste should return soon, Howard is playing in FLA which means his return to the big team is imminent.

Wasn't Howard in the dugout (not eligible to play) last weekend?

Good question about the callup if Myers can't go... Jason Anderson might have the most experience; Matt Smith is a lefty, which is a point in his favour.

Ok, my US geography is poor. I knew he was playing in Lakewood, I assumed it was in FLA but I now see that it is in NJ. Anyway, yesterday Howard was 2 for 3 with 1 HR and 4 RBI's for Lakewood.

The Phillies plan is for him to play again today in Lakewood and then return to the Phillies. Makes sense for him to be rehabbing in Jersey, it's close if the Phillies brass wants to see him play.

As for Matt Smith going up, why not? Aren't the Phillies sans lefty in the pen since demoting Castro to AA?
