Oilers goalie Dwayne Roloson is going to try to win a world hockey championship gold medal just like his fellow Norfolk County NHLers Rob Blake and Nelson Emerson.
Roli the Goalie, one of Simcoe, Ont.'s favourite sons, was among the first five players named to Team Canada today for the world championship which begins April 28 in Moscow. At age 37, Roloson might be one of the oldest first-time selections ever for the Team Canada which is made up of players whose teams missed the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Cam Ward would likely be added to the team after the Carolina Hurricanes are eliminated for the playoff picture. You could have both goalies who started Game 1 of last season's Stanley Cup final playing for the same country in the worlds, and you don't need to look it up to know that's never happened before.
Ward is the only goalie out of the Canadians for likely non-playoff teams who will likely still be playing when the 2010 Olympics come around. A quick check of the busiest Canadian goalies reveals that the others are the likes of Curtis Joseph and Ed Belfour, although the Leafs' 26-year-old Andrew Raycroft could have some time on his hands by next week.
Blake and Emerson (from Waterford, near Simcoe) both played on the '94 team which won Canada's first world title in 33 years, and Blake also played on the victorious '97 team.
