THE INEVITABLE WAS RIGHT ON TIME...

There's poetic irony: Islanders goalie Wade Dubielewicz sealed the Leafs' fate with a pair of pokechecks straight from Johnny Bower's playbook.

The second stop, on Sergei Brylin, closed the portal of hope that had briefly opened when the Devils' John Madden jammed in the tying goal at 19:59 of the third period, nailing down the Islanders' 3-2 victory and the final Eastern playoff spot.

Anyway, one of our bedrock principles is that it's no sign of character to wallow after losses (not saying we actually follow through this, but we try). Someone else can be the guy to write about how The Wonderful World of Gary Bettman has given us a season decided by a penalty-shot shootout, but hey, if it's good enough to decide the World Cup of Soccer, it's good enough to decide who's going to lose to the Sabres in Round 1 of the playoffs.

To answer one reader's question, when it comes to what hockey team might give Ontario a winner, we might have to wait for a second team in the GTA.

Isles win in a SO.

Sens have a history of choking in the playoffs. Leafs choke in the regular season and just miss the playoffs the last two seasons.
When will an Ontario team step up to make this hockey mad province proud?

Why would getting rid of Bettman make any difference? The US dominated NHL owners would simply replace him with another look-alike american lawyer/businessman. It is all about business and making money, particularly in the 24 US franchise areas.
In Canada pro hockey is a national passion. In the US it is strictly a business.

Come now. It's a business to George Gillett, Eugene Melnyk and MLSE too.

You didn't specify that it had to be a hockey team -- but there's a basketball team based in Ontario that's more likely to win a championship than either NHL team.
