HOCKEY LAST NIGHT: A MODEST PROPOSAL

New rule, which may or may not be inspired by a certain chrome-domed TSN/NBC hockey analyst of French-Irish descent whose first name is a six-letter crossword clue for tool:

Never, ever, refer to the NHL's video replay room in Toronto again as the "war room." It's not cool. It's kind of creepy and it makes one wonder who the hell the league has in mind as its target audience in the United States. Hockey doesn't go for that paramilitary crap that stuff belongs in Amercian football, and even there its place is dubious at best.

And you know why else "war room" is inappropriate? Because the NHL still allows fighting and everyone knows... you can't fight in the war room.

Blackhawks 4 Flames 3 (overtime): Every team that comes in dragging a 10-game losing streak should get a home date against the Flames, who like many a right-leaning politician, are finding they're not such hot stuff when they leave Alberta.

Ducks 4 Stars 1: Oh, to be able to read Brian Burke's blood pressure when Chris Pronger got in a fight in his first game back from injury.

NHL Scoreboard

Tonight's better games: Rangers-Bruins, 7; Sens-Habs, 7:30 (all times Eastern).

HOMETOWN BREAKDOWN

Our Frontenacs, missing five players who will likely be suspended after a line brawl in Bellevegas on Saturday, were pumped 10-2 by the Mississauga IceDogs. Stefan Legein had a short-handed goal on his way to a "mortarboard trick." On the bright side, the Fronts did score first. OK, that's not much, but that's precisely the point.

The 67's remain a point back after a 5-1 loss to Guelph, who got two goals from Kingston-born Jamie Arniel to run their point streak to 13 games.

I just realized that the #5 Gee-Gees womens hockey team won four games in three days.
On Jan 26 they beat Dal 7-0 in the Atlantic challenge. On Jan 27 they beat SMU 2-0, in the Atlantic challenge. Then on Jan 28 they beat Carleton in the afternoon, in a regular season game 3-2. That same evening they played their last game in the Atlantic challenge and beat #3 ranked SFX 4-3 in a shoot out. Never, heard of a university hockey team playing such a schedule, let alone winning all four games! Quite a feat.
