HOCKEY LAST NIGHT: LEAFS BRUIN-BASH

What you may have missed, as you decided to dedicate yourself to becoming the No. 3 Proust scholar in North America. It's good to have realistic goals.

MarLeafs 5 Bruins 1: Boston didn't have much left in the tank, so this one was catered to Toronto. Mats Sundin showed his characteristic flair for lifting the Leafs from below-average to somewhat above-average, and that was enough on this night.

Thrashers 3 Senators 2 (OT): Not being in Hockey County right now, one could only hazard a guess that the positive spin was that the injury-ravaged Sens pulled out a point against a quality Eastern Conference team, giving them seven of a possible eight points since Jason Spezza was lost to injury. No need to talk about Joe Corvo getting beat in overtime or that Marian Hossa guy having a hand in every Atlanta goal, eh?

NHL Scoreboard

Today's better games: Ducks-Red Wings, 7:30 (Steve Yzerman's sweater retirement); Hurricanes-Penguins, 7:30; Canucks-Flames, 9 p.m.

HOMETOWN BREAKDOWN

It's silly to be nostalgic for old arenas, especially the Mem Centre, which was an eyesore long before I saw my first game there at the age nine in 1985-86, when the local shinny concern was called the Kingston Canadians. Still, I wanted to visit one last time before the new waterfront arena opens in '07-08. As it happened yesterday, the Frontenacs jacked the Erie Otters 12-4 in the annual New Year's Day matinee at the Mem Centre.

Erie is truly terrible and the Fronts went ahead 2-0 just 2 1/2 minutes in and were up 5-1 after Bobby Hughes, who had a hat trick, scored a shortie in the first minute of the second period. Hughes' line with newly acquired overager Matt Auffrey and Bobby Bolt on the wings ended up totalling 14 points. Rookie forwards Josh Brittain and Nathan Moon, who each turn 17 later this week, each chipped in goals.

Moon and yours truly not only share a given first name, but a birthday. I turned 13 on the day he was born, Jan. 4, 1990. Do the math and figure out what Thursday means in the life of N. Sager.

(UPDATE: The Whig-Standard put it best: "The Erie Otters were full value for their debacle... The Frontenacs scored almost as many goals – 12 – as the Otters managed shots on net – 13.")

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
