CIS CORNER: HOOPS CLASSIC TONIGHT

Short midday stuff, concentrating on the CIS:

  • If the CIS men's basketball poll went to 11 like the amps in Spinal Tap, the Queen's Golden Gaels would be nationally ranked for the first time in school history. The Gaels had 51 points in the official coaches' poll released today, most among the Also Receiving Votes teams. The Alberta Golden Bears -- tradional powerhouse, with a veteran coach in Don Horwood --- are a deserving No. 10, taking over from the York Lions. The Ottawa Gee-Gees slipped another two notches to No. 9, and of course Carleton's No. 1.
  • One big factor in the success of Rob Smart's Gaels -- they're second in the 16-team OUA in both three-pointers made and three-point shooting percentage.
  • CIS Hoops Blog notes 9,100 fans are expected for the Capital Hoops Classic tonight at Scotiabank Place (yours truly among them) and that would set a a CIS regular-season attendance record. (McMaster drew more than 10,000 fans to a few pre-season games that were held as part of an anti-bullying awareness campaigns.) Our man James Mirtle gave Dave DeAveiro's Gee-Gees the spotlight for Monday's Globe and Mail.
  • We advanced the game last Friday, and the good lord willing, will become perhaps the first person to liveblog a CIS basketball game.
  • Women's hockey top 10: U of O Gee-Gees stay No. 5, Queen's takes sole possession of No. 6. Debbie O'Brien (Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien's former spouse) has been named honourary chairwoman for the CIS championship in March.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
