PENS SAGA IS BAL-SILLIE ONCE AGAIN

Jim Balsillie, the BlackBerry guy, wants to get back in the game and bid for the Pittsburgh Penguins again.

He wrote a letter (published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) to Mario Lemieux saying, in part, "Every day that is lost is a day which can be used to negotiate an economically viable Plan B. It would be a tragedy if delay narrowed the options and resulted in a sale to someone who would immediately seek to relocate the team."

As noted yesterday, Pittsburgh's demographics suggest it is going to be very difficult for three major pro sports teams to survive in that city. The "Plan B" for a new hockey arena could very well come to fruition, but that doesn't mean the fan base and financial base would be there to provide stability when the Penguins are in down seasons. It's hard to see why Lemieux wouldn't want to strike out for new territory.
