HOCKEY LAST NIGHT: FLAMES ROARING, VANCOUVER NOT SO MUCH

Stuff you may have missed while rushing out to buy more Legos to finish off your scale model of the old Metropolitan Stadium...

Red Wings 3 Canucks 2: One can only imagine how Senators fans would react if their team had only 10 shots in the first two periods, then gave up a short-handed goal for the game-winner -- on a screened shot, no less -- after Roberto Luongo had kept them in the game all night.

Vancouver fans, ahem, are a little more used to losing. The defence-depleted Canucks have lost seven out of 10.

Luongo might be the Joe Corvo of the Western Conference -- a high-priced newcomer wondering how in the hell he let his agent convince him to give up 80-degree beach weather year-round to live in a Canadian climate and be analyzed to death by 20,000 armchair GMs. (Today's forecast for Vancouver, by the way, is "rain at times heavy." You don't say.)

Flames 3 Blues 0: That's the "new NHL" for you... the Flames have given up only one 5-on-5 goal in their past six games. Miikka Kiprusoff notched his second shutout in three games to help Calgary win their fifth straight.

Rangers 3 Devils 2: Jaromir Jagr scored twice in 26 seconds to tie it up early in the third, with the the second goal coming on a shot that looked like a Tiger Woods sand wedge, arcing through the air and out of the reach of Martin Brodeur in New Jersey's net. Sixty-four seconds later, with Brodeur still trying to figure out what the hell had just happened (and why he didn't pick someone other than Damien Cox to collaborate on his book), Brendan Shanahan scored the winner for the Rangers.

Coyotes 4 Wild 3: Even a stopped clock is right... in one of the rare instances where a fight actually has some bearing on the game, Georges Laraque woke up Phoenix by tussling with Minny's Derek Boogaard when they were down 2-0 early, then later set up a pair of goals during the Coyotes' comeback.

Laraque said afterward he knew a fight "would get the crowd going," which is a bit disingenuous since said crowd was only "officially" 12,002.

OTHER STUFF

  • James Mirtle, incidentally, quite reasonably wonders who is responsible for choosing the names for the NHL all-star ballot, and have those people actually seen any games lately?
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have permission to interview Ken Hitchcock (still being paid by the Flyers) for their coaching job. Logically, though, wouldn't Hitchcock just cash his cheques for a while and wait on a sweeter gig?

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.

I live in Vancouver. That weather forecast is deadly accurate. I was soaked at the end of my 15 minute walk to the fabled SkyTrain. Also: winds gusting to 80km/h. The only upside is that it'll get up to 12 degrees today.
