EXTRAS: STUFF YOU MAY HAVE MISSED

Who'd've thought Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father?
  • No surprise here that Brandon Webb of the Diamondbacks won the National LeagueCy Young Award despite his mere 16 wins and 3.10 earned-run average (it was predicted).

That his "average" numbers were played up just goes to show the knowledge gap between the media and the Seamheads when it comes to finding a player's true value. On that note, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo -- remember when the Red Sox traded him for Wily Mo Peña? -- actually had a slight edge over Webb for the most Pitching Win Shares in the NL. Arroyo didn't even rate a third-place vote.
  • Well, at least one U.S. sportswriter is calling for Ricky Williams to stay with the Toronto Argonauts, even if he's a bit of a wise-ass about it. Do you get the sense Justin Doom had Ricky in his fantasy league in 2004?
  • Oh, and as for the Bobby Knight "controversy" over his making physical contact with a player, please. Yes, it would be news if Coach K did it, but that's a B.S. comparison. Coach K coaches in the hotbed of NCAA basketball. Knight coaches in off-the-beaten-path Lubbock, Texas, so maybe a better question is would it be news if it was the coach at some other second-tier basketball school. It's a story, and Knight should sit out a game or two, but it's not worthy of a lead story on ESPN.com.

Bottom line: I don't have it in me to be sanctimonious and call it an assault, like at least one pundit did.
  • Hometown Breakdown note: My good friend and former colleague Chris Thomas came up short in his bid for a council seat in Norfolk County on Monday, finishing fourth in a 10-person race for the two Simcoe seats. Not bad for a political first-timer.
