SATURDAY NIGHT SIX PACK

Stuff you may have noticed while trying to get in on the Hugh Johnson Project:
  • Very disappointing, Pete McEntegart of Sports Illustrated. Only 10 reasons why you hate the Yankees? (Just kidding... the feature is called "The 10 Spot.") However, this author can usually come up with 15 new reasons to hate the Yankees over lunch. By the way, some how, some way, let's please not have another Subway Series.
  • Greg Hughes has some free MP3 goodness.
  • Hey, Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is almost the fifth-best player in the National League. The Mets' Carlos Beltran is still the right choice for most valuable player; in the AL, the choice is Derek Jeter.
  • Love that unbalanced schedule: The Kansas City Royals just gave up 10 runs in the top of the first inning to the Detroit Tigers, who are now likely to protect that 1½-game AL Central lead over the Minnesota Twins. Barring an all-time comeback, that will be 13 wins in 14 tries for the Tigers against lowly Kansas City this season.
  • The Blue Jays, 5-3 victors over the Red Sox, played the kind of game that was supposed to happen regularly this season -- seven strong innings from A.J. Burnett, timely hitting, and some (for lack of a less hackneyed word) stout relief work from Justin Speier and B.J. Ryan. It's too bad that didn't happen more often, and of course, it came against what was about half of Boston's regular lineup.
  • Remember Bran Van 3000's mid-'90s hit Drinking In L.A. ... they apparently never went drinking in Bellevegas, Ontario. Don't worry, though, a trio of past and present Simcoe Reformer staffers had ourselves a grand time. Which is a mea culpa for the late update today.

Back with more later. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
