FLORIDA SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES

Notes from a day on the diamond:

  • Drop the Florida Marlins from the list of National League wild-card contenders. A four-game deficit with 13 to play -- and two other teams to leapfrog -- is too much for a young team. Florida blew a four-run lead in the 10th yesterday and lost 8-7 to the Atlanta Braves, helped by three errors. Another factor working against the Marlins is that their next opponent is the Mets, while the Dodgers, Philadelphia and San Francisco all meet sub-.500 teams in their next series.
  • Ibid., see yesterday's post: Another killer loss, thanks in large part to Frank Thomas homering, kept the White Sox five games behind the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers. Chicago will have six cracks at the Tigers and Minnesota Twins, but it's 3-4-5 hitters have gone ice-cold -- Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and Jim Thome went a combined 4-for-32 in the Oakland series.
  • Toronto Blue Jays fans, such as yours truly, have long wondered when Aaron Hill is going to start hitting for power and not just for average. The middle infielder -- second base or shortstop, which is it? -- hit his second game-winning homer in three days to vault the Jays to a 5-3 win over the Devil Rays.
  • Best of both worlds: Seeing the Evil Empires split two games in the same day. You get to see them both lose.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
