DRIFTING OFF TO DIAMOND VISIONS

Here's what The Geek is on about early this a.m.:

  • Greg Maddux tossed one-hit, no-run ball for seven innings and Takaski Saito pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 19th save in 21 tries as the L.A. Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 last night to take a 1½-game lead in the tight NL West. If you live in the Eastern time zone and hadn't seen Saito pitch before, it doesn't take long to see why Vin Scully loves the veteran Japanese righty. He throws a wicked slider, which must be a big reason for why he is averaging almost 12 strikeouts per inning pitched.
  • Just looking over the Padres' and Dodgers' pitching staffs, it looks like neither would be a team the Mets would want to face in the Division Series.
  • Great night for the Detroit Tigers... their division rivals, not so much. Detroit pounded the Orioles 17-2 (so much for rookie Hayden Penn putting their bats in a deep freeze), while their AL Central pursuers, Minnesota and Chicago, both lost despite starting their aces (Johan Santana and Jon Garland, respectively). Detroit's now up two games on the Twins, four ahead of the White Sox.
  • It will be mildly satisfying if the Blue Jays can finish with 87 wins, which would be their most since '98. That requires winning 10 of their 15 remaining games, which would be a tall order since their last four series are against Boston, the Yankees, Detroit and the Yankees again.
  • What could be better than back-to-back day-night doubleheaders between the Evil Empires? Not much, considering it might drain the Red Sox pitching staff for their visit to Toronto next week.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
