As noted here Sunday, Hamilton Tiger-Cats GM Rob Katz was pretty close to being a condemned man, and now he's walked the plank, resigning as the team's chief operating officer. The new GM is Marcel Desjardins, who's from the Hamilton area and has spent five years with the Montréal Alouettes as the assistant GM. The Als are known for having one the best scouting and player-personnel department in the CFL, and those are areas where Hamilton is most deficient.
Also, the Ticats needed to make a move now... Hamilton fans are praised for turning out to watch a gadawful team, but the reality is that apparently about half of the team's some 19,000 season-ticket holders are in the last year of a three-year package that was offered before the '04 season, when Bob Young had just bought the team, Greg Marshall had been hired as coach and optimism reigned supreme. Wait any longer and a lot more people would be thinking about giving up their seats, not that they probably haven't already.
Of course, this all leads back to next Monday's game against the Argonauts, which the Ticats are gonna win even though it there's no rational reason why they should.
OTHER BUSINESS
- Rough day for Canada's women at the world fastpitch championship: a 4-0 loss to the United States.
- Why do people hate Jeff George? Plus: Farewell to the Ottawa Lynx, only four days until the start of CIS football and Pat Pearce and I debate the Cy Young merits of Roy Halladay and Johan Santaña.
- By the way, James Mirtle is also a follower of CIS football. So I'm not alone here. (Of course, for James it's part of his job at The Globe and Mail.)
That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
