DIAMOND THOUGHTS AS I NOD OFF

The Geek has some late-night baseball thoughts:
  • It's been a rough couple nights for the guys who are supposed to be the Blue Jays' 7th/8th inning guys in 2007. Jeremy Accardo gave up the tying homer in the eighth to Travis Hafner last night, setting the stage for Cleveland to win 3-2 in 10 innings on Jhonny Peralta's walk-off homer. One night earlier, Brandon League faced four batters and retired none during Cleveland's decisive rally.
  • Tigers outfielder Craig Monroe looked like George Costanza giving batter tips to a young Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams last night, hitting a three-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth off Scott Proctor for a 5-3 win. What set it all up was Curtis Granderson (one of the AL's most underrated players) working a walk from Proctor on a full count to keep it alive. How often are late-inning homers immediately preceded by a walk?
  • On the bright side, as bad as they're playing, the Jays are talking seriously about finishing second in the AL East. So what if that would be a big bag of nothing and it would be since the Red Sox have similarly screwed the pooch this month and are now only two games ahead. Hey, it's Roy Halladay against David Wells tonight, so that should be one win, although if Wells is put on a plane to San Diego to join the Padres, all bets are off.
  • Winning day for Canada's national teams. Lauren Bay pitched an 11-strikeout, one-hit shutout in Canada's 2-0 win at the World Fastpitch Championship in China. The Canadian women should finish no worst than third in their pool, since two of their remaining prelim games are against South Africa and Italy. As for the men's team, a 7-3 win sent it on to the second round of the Americas Olympic qualifier in Havana.

That's all for now. Send your thoughts to neatesager@yahoo.ca.
