CIS Corner: Ravens' Doornekamp inks deal with Italy's Eldo Caserta

You might say Aaron Doornekamp turned some heads as his own was getting rattled.

Doug Smith had a passing reference to it yesterday. Some Googling reveals that the graduated Carleton star and Canadian national team forward has signed with Eldo Caserta in Serie A, Italy's top division.

Signing with a team in the Italian league is a pretty good deal for Doornekamp, whose other brother and former high school teammate Nate also played professionally in Europe after he finished his career in Europe. Obviously, the bleeds-it-leads folk in the media might draw some amusement out of Doornekamp signing with a team in the country after the little set-to during that friendly two weeks ago.

Doornekamp, as you well know, is training in Puerto Rico as Team Canada readies for next week's Tuto Marchand Cup in San Juan. That is a tune-up tournament for the Aug. 26-Sept. 6 upcoming FIBA Americas championship, where Canada needs a top four finish to qualify for the 2010 worlds.

Obviously, with the hometown connection (that Ernestown green, eh), one has to feel pretty happy for Aaron and his extended basketball family.

Update: Mark Wacyk has reaction from Carleton coach Dave Smart, as well as an Osvaldo Jeanty update over at cishoops.ca. Please click through.

I am on vacation this wk. and it would be rude to my travelling companion to blog rather than be sociable.

I'll hit it hard next week.
