CIS Corner: Hughes addition for football Gee-Gees

Notes on our athletes/teams of interest from The 613...

Gee-Gees:
The Hamilton Spectator noted on Friday that the OUA's fourth-leading receiver last season, Steven Hughes, "will be transferring" from York to Ottawa. Hughes would have to sit out a year as a transfer, but he's playing junior football in Hamilton in the meantime. He would probably be a very good fit at a school that's made a few tall receivers -- Adam Nicolson, Ibrahim Tounkara, a few years earlier, and so on -- into stars.

Football: The Saint Mary's Huskies star quarterback Erik Glavic, as noted in further detail The CIS Blog, is not a sure bet to get back on the field after having knee surgery last fall. It's worth noting that Nathan Beeler, the star QB for the Ottawa Sooners last season, is now at Saint Mary's. Beeler was a 70% passer in the Sooners' pro style passing game, and he saw some action in the CIS with the Calgary Dinos in 2006, so he's not the typical newcomer.

Is there any truth to the rumour that AUS Hec nomineee for 2006 Ivan Birungi plans to enroll at Ottawa this fall, and play his last year of eligibility there. I can find no information that lends credence to this rumour. It is probably false.

I see that the GeeGees will play Bishops in an exhibition game on Sunday , August 24 , as part of the Ottawa SuperEx.

Hmm.... someone's going to have to get on the horn on Tuesday.

Birungi played OVFL here, he didn't play last season and yes, he's got a year left.

Was it here that I read about the possibility of two ex-Queen's players and OUA All-Stars, Ian Haslett and Sean O'Donnell, possibly playing for the Gee-Gees next year? Or did I just imagine that?

You did not imagine it. Hazlett entered uOttawa as a student in a Master's program last season. He did not play because he had surgery on his knee due to an injury suffered in a CFL camp. If his knee is sound he might play this season.
O'Donnell was registerd at uOttawa last school year as a Special Student. Not sure exactly what that means: but it could mean that he was doing courses that he was missing from his undergrad days at Queen's and are required for a program he wants to get into this year at Ottawa. If he returns to t5Ttawa he does have a year of eligibility left.

Other known transfers to Ottawa are Matt Todd, running back;an Ottawa native who did a stint at SMU; transferred last year, and is eligible to play this Year.
Ron Kelly who was a starter for SMU as a receiver a couple of seasons back. He enrolled at Ottawa last year and is expected to play this season.
Center Ryan Mousseau, was Concordia Stingers rookie of the year in 2006. An Ottawa native he trnsferred to uOttawa last year, sat out the required season, and is expected to play this season.

They need a centre, don't they? Kevin Kelly's graduated ... ?

According to a a poll on All Canada Gridiron, Queen's has the best recruiting class in the OUA.

Hazlett enrolled at uOttawa last year; I have heard that he would be back on the field this season after sitting out with a knee injury.

There was talk on ACG that O'Donnell was coming too; he could play right away since he finished a degree at that other Eastern Ontario school.

Yep, Kellys done. That is why O'Donnell ---who was registered at Ottawa last year as a special student--I checked the student directory---and Mousseau are such timely catches. Kyle Kirkwood, who sat out last year due to injury, is also expected back to play out his eligibility on the O-line.

I also checked the AVG poll and saw that Ottawa is a distant last in that poll with 86 votes. It is my fault! I got bored and quit after recording my 85th vote.

I got a bigger laugh from that than I did from Roger Goodell's comment about the Brett Favre drama that he "didn't want to be interject himself ... I was interjected." You're the commissioner of football! It kind of is your business.

Anyways, we should try to nail down some of the Gee-Gees talk. I wouldn't put a ton of stock in that poll, since it is a bit of a popularity contest. Ottawa also doesn't announce recruits (because, oftentimes, players can change their mind), so that might have hurt their polling numbers.

It's a surprise Queen's was No. 1. I would have also expected Guelph to be higher.

In other places, WLU and Western are touting that they have had the best recruting class. These schools tend to announce them in a comprehensive list That creates a perception that they have recruited best when other schools remain silent .Ottawa does not release names often. Neither does Queen's as far as I know.
Also those schools with a larger acrive fan base tend to make more noise about their team in the off season. Ottawa does not have such a fan base.
You and I have discussed this before,Neate. Ottawa lacks a solid fan base, and it hurts in many ways.

Aren't they lucky they have me. I am actually thinking of going to see the opener at Western this year.
I have never been there for a game and this might be the once in a lifetime year, but it is far from certain yet. Of course I usually make the easier trip to watch Ottawa @ Queen's.

It's a shame there isn't more fan support for the Gee-Gees, in the stands and on the Internets, espy. when you consider their record.

They have a veteran team, a good schedule, and the OUA hosts the AUS in the semi-final bowl game ... the runway is clear for a Vanier run.

I know. And the football gods know I have tried to do my bit.
I am such a nerd that I even e-mailed the new prez Alan Rock, who was a contempary of mine and a casual acquaintance when we were students, to ask him to marshall more support behind the Gee Gees.

I heard earlier this offseason on ACG earlier that both Western and Laurier had the best recruiting classes, but these teams have made their recruites known (Laurier for the first time in YEARS!! They kept things under wraps for the past 5 years pretty much, as a Hawks fan glad they've opened it back up). I think it's going to be a logjam at the top of the OUA, I think it might turn into one of those "any playoff team can take it" seasons once again.

And if Glavic is gone, not to downplay the rest of the AUS but I have a feeling that the OUA might have the advantage. We'll see though...

SMU's head-and-shoulders above that conference, but the OUA is better than it was in 2002, the last time an AUS school had to come to Ontario for the semi-final bowl game.

It's very likely that it will be an OUA team vs. Laval in the Vanier. (Oddly enough, the Rouge et Or have never met an OUA team in the national title game -- they've beaten SMU and Saskatchewan twice each.)
