Fronts: Surly only looks out for one guy — Doug Springer

A couple bullet points relating to the OHL team who can be enjoyed as camp, as kitsch, as cautionary example:
  • The possibility of Greg Bignell coaching the Kitchener Rangers could be more schadenfreulicious than the ending of The Shawshank Redemption.

There are still some people who believe Bignell got a raw deal when he was ousted by the Kington Frontenacs in 2003 -- five years and three coaches ago. Common sense suggests the Rangers will stay in-house after Peter DeBoer made the big lateral move leap on Friday to the NHL's Florida Panthers. DeBoer's long-time first mate, Steve Spott, could just take one step to the right, unless he gets another job.

Bignell guided his Cambridge teams to back-to-back Ontario Junior B championships. It would be sweet if he ended up with the top job with the OHL's flagship franchise, after not really getting much of a chance from the all-knowing hockey minds in Kingston.
  • Dammit ... there was a passionate plea here for Kingston's own Kirk Muller to buy the Frontenacs. Now it's come out that fellow Kingstonian Doug Gilmour is interested in OHL ownership, with the Oshawa Generals. Could he please look about a two-hour drive down the 401 to his hometown?
  • You can't make this stuff up: All four of the Frontenacs' visits to Ottawa this season to play the 67's are afternoon games, 2 p.m. starts.

It's almost like the OHL wants to guard against any long-suffering Fronts follower who lives in Ottawa arriving in a drunken rage and yelling obnoxious, albeit cruelly accurate remarks toward the players' bench. Frankly, it's very good planning at the league level.

The first Fronts-Bulls game is Oct. 1 in bucolic Bellevegas ("a small town with big-city problems," widely attributed), with Kingston returning on Oct. 22. Kingston hosts the coulda-woulda-shoulda-been Memorial Cup champions on Nov. 7, Nov. 21, Dec. 28 and Jan. 16. The first two and the last one are on Friday nights; the late December game is a Sunday matinee.

The OHL schedule is posted in its entirety at Loose Pucks. By the way, you might love the headline at Yahoo! Sports about the Senators hiring Craig Hartsburg: "In Hartsburg, Senators seek inspiration from uninspired choice."

Hey now.

Bet ya a fiver Belleville finishes above K-town next year despite being in rebuilding mode ;).

And that's one obscure reference in the title. It kind of scares me that I picked up on it in three seconds.
